Why an Independent Engineering Report Matters

When a vehicle develops a problem, it is important to understand exactly what has gone wrong before deciding who may be responsible and what should happen next.

An independent engineer reports what they find — nothing more, nothing less.

A separate technical assessment

A dealership may carry out its own inspection, and a customer may have their own understanding of the fault. However, an independent engineering report provides a separate technical assessment of the vehicle, carried out by an engineer who is not employed by the selling dealership.

What an independent report can do

  • Provide an objective assessment: the engineer examines the vehicle independently and records their own professional findings.
  • Identify the underlying problem: it can help establish the nature of the fault, its likely cause and whether further investigation is required.
  • Consider when the problem may have developed: where technically possible, the report can assess whether the findings are consistent with an underlying or developing defect, rather than simply subsequent wear and deterioration.
  • Support informed decisions: it gives the customer, dealership and finance provider technical evidence to consider when assessing the complaint and possible next steps.
  • Help avoid unnecessary disputes: clear technical findings can help all parties understand the problem and make decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
  • Provide a written record: the customer receives a documented assessment, including relevant observations, photographs and test results where available.

Independent evidence benefits everyone

Independent engineering evidence is not about automatically blaming a dealership or guaranteeing a vehicle rejection. It is about establishing what can reasonably be determined about the vehicle and its reported problems.

A properly conducted independent inspection can help consumers understand their position while also giving dealerships and finance providers an opportunity to consider technical evidence before reaching a decision.

Our aim is to encourage fair, informed and evidence-based outcomes.

Important

An independent report does not automatically establish legal liability or guarantee a repair, replacement, refund or vehicle rejection. Its value depends on the inspection undertaken, the evidence available and the engineer's findings.
